My Brighton & Hove Photo Project
My Brighton&Hove Photo Project came to life in 2018 during Lucy’s MA research at First Base Day Centre, where she worked with people affected by homelessness using creative photography. Inspired by how using photography created connection and gave confidence to participants in her workshops, Lucy approached Café Art, a London based CIC who had successfully run MyLondon calendar project for many years .
Café Art partnered with Lucy to run the very first My Brighton&Hove project. The project provided opportunity for people affected by homelessness to share perspectives & build confidence through photography. 100 single use cameras were handed out in June to people affected by homelessness. The participants had a week to respond to the brief “My Brighton and Hove”. The photos were then developed, and dispaleyd in exhibitions at ONCA Gallery and as part of Brighton Photo Fringe collective hub at Phoenix gallery.
“Taking part in My Brighton & Hove Photo Project has given me a purpose. I feel so much better about myself now thanks to this project. It has got me out of my depression.” Project participant.
A selection of images were printed in the calendar, which was sold with profits going back in to creative workshops for people affected by homelessness. The project was featured on BBC Radio, ITV Meridian, Heart Radio Sussex and Latest TV. You can view some of the media coverage here.
